Oh my goodness May is already whizzing by! I totes forgot to get these done on time, with all these deadlines I have to meet that are quickly, too quickly, approaching. I needed a bit of zen so I took a peek at my fave garden buddha- he just sits quietly under the bamboo, smiling away, no worries if it’s raining, sunning, or snowing, he keeps smiling out at the world slowly collecting a pretty patina of moss and rusty goodness. I think he’s reminding me of this: breathe, be more zen, relax, and slow down. Ok I will, in a sec…! I just have to…..

May we be Zen! Or try to be. I’m trying I’m trying.

I have been feverishly working on this quilt for the past few days to enter into a contest (more deets on that coming soon). I finally finished it up last night, binding and all!

I designed a collection of kids prints called Silly Munky, which I have available in my Spoonflower shop here. I wanted to show off the prints and make something fun with them so what’s better than a quilt that either a boy or a girl can enjoy! This is a 100% original design, created by me.

I used chunks of the prints, mixed with tone-on-tone-ish prints from my stash, within each word “pennant”, which I paper pieced, then did scrappy style borders on them.

Then I assembled them with white borders and did a wonky piano key scrappy border around the entire thing using more chunks of the fabrics mixed with more of the same prints from my stash. I freemotion (mostly) quilted it with loops and hearts, mixed in with some straight lines running wonky style across the quilt. Then I did red polkadotty binding to tie it all together!

I’m really happy with how it came out!! Here’s the back with bigger chunks of the munky prints…

I’ll keep you posted on the contest, the deadline is today, and voting for first round finalists will be open May 1- I’ll share a link once it’s up and hope you might vote for me!
Depending what happens, this quilt will be the first one to go up in my etsy shop, (currently empty yikes!! Better fix that fast!) at some point! So if you’re looking for a very special pressie for a very special kid check back soon…. winkwink… I might also get energetic at some point and do up a patt for this to sell as well.
One down, 3 more submissions to go! Back to the sewing room- stitching away in between making bread (from Company’s Coming Bread- the cover recipe!) and my mum’s yummy bean salad- nomnom! Hope your weekend is going great!

Woohoo! The mail lady brought us more blocks for Norm’s Fab Bee quilt, this time from Ellen! Check it out!

Love love love them!! She made one big super improv scrappy style heart, and one small one with a touch of embroidery- in green to match! How cool is that! This quilt, I have said it a few times already I know- but it is going to be incredible- very rock n’ roll and very Norm. SO thrilled!!
Ellen is an amazing sew-er and her work is always impressive and so creative! I know this because she is also in our Fraser Valley Modern Quilt Guild and her quilts are just beautiful. Thank you so much again Ellen! I’m adding you to the Rock n’ Roll quilt of fame!
The mail lady also brought me some awesome fabric I bought on Spoonflower designed by my SF buddy Sharon, aka Scrummy.
I plan to use it in our guild’s colour palette challenge. I better get busy on that too- another project due for beginning of June!
Speaking of projects due, I came across another challenge online a couple of days ago that I have to enter, the deadline is this Sunday! Yikes! Here’s a sneak peek at a part of it I got started on yesterday ( and am madly working on today & this week):

I decided I needed to tackle paper piecing. I was chatting with Berene about it, as she did Norm’s block in a paper piecing style, but no paper- now that is impressive I must say. But dagnabbit, it’s a bit of a beast to learn! I have been wanting to give it a go for ages, and with this project and what I wanted to do for it, it seemed like it would be the perfect solution, so I jumped in and got started. I drafted up the blocks on the computer, and a few curses attempts later, kind of got it figured out. I’m sure it’s pretty basic for those who are in the paper piecing “know”, but it’s working for what I want it to do. I’ll post more pics later as more parts are sewn up!
Better run back to the sewing room-back to workwork tomorrow so must make the most of it- t’rah for now!

I had heard about this block from a couple of stitchy buddies who said Berene was sewing up something waaaaay wicked for Norm’s quilt block. She sent me a sneaky peek and whoa- like how freakin’ awesome & perfectly rock n’ roll is this- a tattoo name block!! She even had a funny story to share about and making a block for a guy she hadn’t met and was it weird that his name is on it …. no way josé it’s so brilliant! Norm wants it in the centre of his quilt, it’s gonna be a total knockout this quilt I tell ya!!
Here’s another pic of the block on it’s own- soooooo cool! Thank you so much again Berene, you rocked it out big time!
